Sigmarus the Water Phoenix is a great fusionable nuker with one great AoE skill, often used in cairos dungeon like dragon B10 or giant b10, and in fire raid dungeon where he can spread the best from his leader skill (44% increase HP in dungeon).
If you are a free to play newbie don't be scared on the amount of time you will need to fuse a natural 5 monster, it's a lot of work no doubt, but look at your monster repository and identify which kind of unit you are missing
If you are missing a water dps for toa, or arena, or dungeons, well this water chicken will worth all the energy consumed for farming fusionable food.
The base Attack stats of Sigmarus the Water Phoenix are very high but you will have to deal with its lack of HP if you want to use him in Arena or non-dungeon PvE scenarios because he is also pretty slow, a good idea could be to team him up with Chloe (Fire Epikion Priest) so she will protect him from enemy's nukers (wind and water in particular) until he can strike his first shot. And believe us, once he strike, this phoenix will do a huge amount of damage on all the enemies especially using Ice Volcano wich is AoE scaling with Max HP of the enemy, and as a gift this skill will decrease targets attack power.
If you have Galleon (Water Pirate Captain), and you hit on defense breaked targets you basically have an Arena Cleaner team to scale up easily to Conqueror 1 on attach.
His second skill also hit really hard on enemies, due to its high multiplier, so to take out the best out of water phoenix you will have to use Rage runes or Violent Runes putting the maximum effort on Attack stats > 1500 (that isn't so difficult thanks to his base attack stats), Critical rate > 70% with the help of the 15% bonus after awakening and Critical damage > 180%. And obviously by investing on it all the devilmon needed to max skill up its skills.
Once reached the Giant B10 dungeon you will have to reserve a spot for him because he can stable up your runs more effectively than Veromos, because 44% HP is better than 33% and even if his not a passive cleanser, actually not a cleanser at all, he can speed up your runs by wiping floors with AoE nuking rendering nearly uselesss the need to cleanse your team.
In auto teams he his used paired with Galleon to make more DPS and clear floors faster, Shannon (Wind Pixie) for a bit of CC and to protect him with defense buff, Bernard (Wind Griffon) for the speed and attack bar boost and
Belladeon (Light Inugami) for the defense break and to provide healing especially in the Boss Floor where the giant can shot your water phoenix pretty hard. If you don't have Galleon you can use Veromos or Ahman (full farmable team) to higher your sustain and success probabilities.
Otherwise if you are advanced in the game, you could try to switch shannon with another AoE nuker like Lushen (Wind Joker) or Lagmaron the Wind Chimera, this will bring you to faster runs (around 1 minute) but will lower your success rate if you don't rune properly your team.
His utility in Dragon B10 differs a lot from the giant one, he's leader skill can be of second choice if you have Verdehile (Fire Vampire) because here the speed would make the real difference between winning and losing,
The Water Phoenix is used in dragon for his DPS only, and while he remains useful as a Farmable unit he could be replaced pretty easy by Taor (Water Chimera) or Theomars (Water Ifrit) or basically any other
water AoE dps of your choice especially if they have more than one AoE skill like Poseidon the Water Sea Emperor.
If you don't have verde, you will need his leader skill to survive so a nearly-farmable team of choice could be this:
Sigmarus: Rage, Blade - Atk%/CD/Atk%
Konamiya (Water Garuda): Swift, Energy - Spd/Hp%/Hp%
Megan (Water Magic Witch): Swift, Focus - Spd/Hp%/Acc%
Briand (Wind Death Knight): Despair, Focus - Hp%/Hp%/Hp%
Belladeon: Violent, Focus - Spd/Hp%/Hp%
This kind of team is called "Reviver Team" and its the slowest but maybe the safer you can get to do auto DB10.
Otherwise you could try a speed team once you get Verdehile, here you are allowed to switch briand with Hwa or Spectra (Fire Griffon) because you will not need a reviver anymore.
As most of the youtube video featuring Rank S and higher will teach us, its leader skill here will work as a counter for the fire minions, we suggest a Violent build here because you want its AoE skill to be available as soon as possible rendering the Hp boost a distaster backup only.
Bring a Mav here to reduce the chances of having the AoE skill on cooldown.
Sigmarus can also be used as a farmer in Faimon Volcano hell mode. This is one of the best scenarios in the game in terms of energy spent/xp received/energy received/mana received. You can use Water Phoenix for this purpose even if it's not the best monster at it, although you have to rune him properly. Both Fatal and Rage sets can be good granting you a good amount of Attack Power and Crit Rate/Crit Damage but you have to rely also on base stats like HP and Speed: here is required a +7k HP and +50 speed. The difficult step is to achieve them by substats, which is mandatory if you want a good water Phoenix to use also in Dungeons (with %ATK / Crit dmg / % ATK build)
In the end, considering the pros and cons of Sigmarus, he is an awesome monster. Rune him right, he is a real deal.
The Whater Phoenix got an amazing buff with the January 2018 balancing patch, second skill now scales with target's Max HP and skill 3 freezes AoE when lands as a critical hit.
This unit can be considered now as a Top Tier monster for Toa Normal and Hard, will be more useful in Dragon and Giant and could be viable even in PvP Offense since the AoE freeze and the chance to make him less squishy because our suggestion is now to rune her without focusing on Atk% (like before) but on Speed, Critical rate, Critical damage and HPs (also a lil bit of accuracy won't hurt).
Crowd Control (TOA): Violent/Blade - Spd / CR or CD / HP%
Full DPS mid-game: Fatal/Blade - %ATK / % Crit damage / %HP
Full DPS late game: Rage/Blade or Rage/Revenge or Violent/Blade - %ATK / % Crit damage / %HP with Crit rate substats

After I finished the Vero fusion a few days ago I started working on that guy. Now after I finished him, I need to 6* him and than will looking forward to clear my first auto gb10. What I can say so far about Sigmarius... Well I runed him Violent/Blade with %ATK / % Crit damage / %HP just as mentioned above. But I guess in my situation you should rune him more likely Fatal/Blade. I just got a few nice violent runes out of some events etc. so I decided to rune him that way. He´s not only nice for gb10 I also use him as a farmer. Because of his AoE he can farm quit good if he´s fast enough. As punkboy48 said before I recommend everyone hasn´t done him yet, going to fuse him. He´s such a brilliant phoenix.
mines current stats, just add bass lvl 40 stats----HP: 6354--atk: 2301--def: 134--spd:10 (CR56-CD87-Res2-7Acc22)

Sigmarus is an absolute beast since his rework/buff for GB12 and toa. His control on the waves and all of his max hp skills (including a great single target attack to make the boss stages even easier) make him imo a must for beginner GB12 teams. Make him lead to make your team some thicc bois and run him with a good 2a Kro or Naomi as well as the hold trinity of Giants (Fran, Loren, and Shannon) and you have your first GB12 full auto team. Runes listed above are fine but if your fresh to the game you can just as easily run him on Swift/Blade HP% or SPD, Crit rate unless you are max then switch to Crit Damage, HP% slot six. This allows the bulk of his damage which is his HP based skills to still deal big damage since these skills can still crit and allow him to be tanky enough to be a staple monster in your early ToA team where his third skill can still control the wave and his second skill be useful for boss stages. There is an argument to be made for a despair Sigmarus for extra control but it isn't necessary. He does ok in pvp as a control water nuker but there are better options especially if you went with the tankier build on him. There isn't much more to say other than he is more worth building as your first fusion even over Veromos who has heavily fallen out of the meta. BUILD THIS MONSTER!
